Small Dogs With Hypoallergenic Fur

Blogged by Tamzin on Thursday February 22nd, 2007 at 5:03 am in hypoallergenic dogs | 0 Comments »

Are you a dog lover?  Do you live in an apartment or small home?  Do you have allergies?  A small dog with hypoallergenic fur might be the answer for you.  “Hypo” is a Greek suffix meaning less or below.  A hypoallergenic dog might still put out allergens, but at a much lower level.  A few dogs that take up less space, making them better for apartment living, are the Silky Terrier, the Havanese, and the Coton de Tulear.  These dogs are all considered of the “Toy” size by the America Kennel Club.

Raw Meat vs. Dog Food: Which is better and why?

Blogged by Tamzin on Tuesday February 20th, 2007 at 5:01 am in Food | 0 Comments »

736351_dogs.jpgSo you’ve got a new dog and you’re wondering what to feed him.  The market is full of commercial diets, and you’ve heard that some people feed their dogs raw meat.  What should you do?

Dogs are omnivores which means they require meat, fiber, and other nutrients to stay healthy.  Generally, adult dogs need a diet that consists of  22-25% protein and 15-19% fat, although puppies, pregnant dogs, and active dogs will have different nutritional requirements.

The Loyal Working Companion Dog: American Pit Bull Terrier

Blogged by Tamzin on Tuesday February 13th, 2007 at 4:58 am in Terriers | 0 Comments »

720825_doggy_eye.jpgThis breed of dog, also fondly called as APBT, is known for its loyalty and intelligence. The dogs with this breed make excellent companions since they are very aggressive because of their protective nature.

How, then, are they different from the Staffies? For the UKC or the United Kennel Club, Staffies and APBT are of the same breed but many disapprove of this suggestion. For instance, if the American Kennel Club has an American Staffordshire terrier, it will be registered as an American pit bull terrier by the United Kennel Club. Furthermore, many breeders noted that their lineages have been separate for a long time already for these dogs to be still considered as having the same variety.

“Sit! Good Dog!” Teaching your dog new tricks

Blogged by Tamzin on Thursday February 8th, 2007 at 4:56 am in Training | 0 Comments »

A dog of any age can learn new tricks.  Your dog should be familiar with the basics - sit, lie down, and stay, as these are excellent building blocks of new tricks.

To teach “sit,“ have a yummy treat in your fingers and place your hand near your dog’s nose.  Say, “sit,” and move the treat over your dog’s head toward his tail.  As he follows the treat, he should sit naturally.  When he successfully completes this behavior, immediately give him the treat as well as verbal praise in an excited voice, saying something such as “good dog!”  When you are first teaching this behavior, always give the food treat and the verbal praise.  When your dog seems to be associating the word sit with this behavior, gradually wean him off the treats.  You may want to train your dog to a release command such as “okay!“ so he knows when he can discontinue each behavior.  As with all training, you should teach “sit” in short (10 minutes or less) sessions followed by free play.
